OIL FURNACES

Looking to learn more about oil furnaces? Here are some of the basic facts you need to know.

Z

Conventional oil furnaces work by taking in cold air from the conditioned space, cleaning it with the air filter, and then warming it up with gas burners using a heat exchanger. The blower motor then drives the warm air through the ductwork of the home to the space being occupied.

Z

Oil furnaces require plenty of clearance so that they obtain sufficient ventilation. Do not store anything near to your oil furnace, or you could form a fire hazard.

Z

Believe it or not, appropriately maintaining your oil furnace in NH is one of the greatest things you can do to assure it stays running safely, effectively, and efficiently, now and for years to come. Preventative oil furnace maintenance and proper service will aid in recognizing any problems your system may be having before they become costly.

How Does an Oil Furnace Work?

Oil furnaces work via a 24-volt signal that is initiated at the thermostat and sent to the control board at the oil system. The system then sends the 24-volt signal through the safety components to ensure the system is safe to run and not in a faulty condition. Once the board receives this signal back, it starts an ignition sequence at the oil burner.

Next, the furnace turns on the burner motor to start a purge of the burner motor and combustion area. At the same time, the oil pump starts pulling the oil from the oil tank. After the pre-purge time has completed, power is then sent to the solenoid valve on the oil burner pump which opens the solenoid and allows the flow of oil to continue through to the nozzle assembly. The oil travels through the assembly down to the nozzle which breaks the oil down into a fine atomized spray pattern. The electrode assembly allows high voltage signal to travel down the electrodes to the electrode tips, which sit right above where the atomized oil leaves the nozzle. The high voltage signal then creates a spark across the electrode tips, which ignites the oil mist.

Once the oil ignites, combustion occurs inside of the heat exchanger. This system will run until the heat call is satisfied at the thermostat. While the heating system is operational, it will circulate the heat created off of the heat exchanger through the duct systems and out the supply registers in your home. Once the call is satisfied, the fan will continue to distribute heat off of the heat exchanger until the temperature of the heat exchanger has dropped low enough to where the air will no longer feel warm. This process will repeat once a call for heat is created again from the thermostat.

What Clients Say

Tyler and his staff were great from first consult through final day of installation. We just replaced a 32-year-old oil furnace with a new one, added additional baseboards to an existing zone, installed a new hot water stove and thermostats. Everything was done very clean, could hardly tell they were there! Would happily recommend them for sales, service and/or installation. Great group.

Repaired a faulty part on our 30+ year furnace that clearly needed a complete overhaul. Recommended we replace the entire HVAC system and gave us credits for the past service, military discount and more! They were all incredibly professional and friendly. Kept us informed every step of the way. Could not be happier with their service and work. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.

– Joanne P., Customer

Kyle was very helpful in performing annual maintenance on a furnace that was new to us and in explaining how the zoned thermostats work. I asked him for information about an annual maintenance plan, and within hours, I had an email from him with complete information about the plans available. We will definitely use Live Free Heating and Cooling for our HVAC needs.

– Pamela M., Customer

My 20-year-old oil burning furnace kicked the bucket. It was crucial to get a replacement quickly, cost effectively and not knowing anything about new equipment, knowledgeably. Live Free Heating and Cooling Company was the only company quick to respond. They took the time to educate my Wife and I on our options. From there they handled everything from removing our old equipment to installing a new system. Every person who walked in my door was professional and I felt at ease with them in our home. Today we have a reliable cost-efficient system that I don’t have to worry about. Tyler kept us informed on everything they were doing, kept on schedule and completed the job quickly and with no mess. I would highly recommend Live Free Heating & Cooling Company.
